Growing Green Giant Arborvitae

Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae

standishi x placata

Green giant arborvitae is a vigorously growing pyramidal evergreen with rich green color that remains outstanding throughout its hardiness zone of 5 thru 9, withstanding temperatures to minus 15 degrees with excellent resistance to damage from ice, snow and wind as well as bagworm, deer and most other pests and diseases. Making this tree an excellent landscape choice.

Green Giant arborvitae is widely grown in the landscape as screens, hedges and windbreaks, (also known as good neighbor trees) providing growth of 3 to 5 feet per year. Remaining thick and full to the ground with a spread of 12 to 20 feet reaching heights of up to 60 feet with 30 to 50 feet being most common.

Recommended spacing of 5 to 6 feet for fast coverage, 10 to 12 feet otherwise. Can be easily trimmed to desired height.

The Green Giant arborvitae grows well in a wide range of soil types from sandy loam to heavy clay, withstanding drought well once established. Plant in full sun for fastest growth but will do well in light shade producing a lush full screen in only a few years, with little or no pruning.

More information is available from the United States Department of Agriculture
